About the workshop leaders:
JIHAN ABBAS, PhD is a researcher and educator who has been involved in the disability movement for several years and has extensive professional and personal experience. These include lived experience with learning disabilities, as well as system navigation for her brother with Down Syndrome. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Carleton University, currently teaches in the School of Disability Studies at Ryerson University and is a research associate for DAWN Canada.
HELEN RIES, MBA is social researcher and facilitator working primarily with organizations and programs aimed at creating a more just, accessible and equanimous society for people with disabilities. She is the founder of The Sibling Collaborative, an initiative that supports adults who have a sibling with a disability. Most importantly, seven years ago, Helen became the primary caregiver to her brother, Paul, a person with Down syndrome.
